Adding Manual Accounts
How to create accounts without institution sync for cash, foreign accounts, or Free plan usage.
Track Accounts Without Institution Sync
Manual accounts let you add any financial account to NivoaFlow without connecting through Plaid. This is useful when institution sync is not available or not needed.
When to Use Manual Accounts
- Cash wallets — track physical cash you keep on hand
- Foreign accounts — accounts at institutions not supported by Plaid
- Free plan — manage accounts without a paid subscription
- Property and vehicles — track the value of real estate and cars
- Investment accounts — monitor balances for accounts you update periodically
- Unsupported institutions — smaller credit unions or fintech accounts not in Plaid's network
How to Create a Manual Account
1. Go to Accounts
Open the Accounts page from the main menu.
2. Select Add Account
Choose Add Account in the top-right. A form opens with all the fields you need.
3. Fill In the Details
- Name — a recognisable label (e.g., "Cash Wallet," "UK Savings")
- Type — chequing, savings, credit card, line of credit, loan, investment, property, vehicle, cash, or other (see supported account types)
- Institution — optional, but helpful for organisation
- Currency — CAD, USD, GBP, or EUR
- Current balance — the balance to start tracking from
- Interest rate (APR) — optional for credit cards, lines of credit, and loans
4. Save
Select Save and the account is ready. It appears in your account list and contributes to your net worth calculation.
Keeping Balances Up to Date
Since manual accounts do not sync automatically, you update balances yourself. Options:
- Edit the current balance directly from the account form
- Add a balance history entry to record point-in-time changes — once you do, the latest entry drives the displayed balance
- Import transactions via CSV to maintain a detailed transaction history
- Add individual transactions manually
Manual Accounts and Net Worth
Manual accounts are included in your net worth just like synced accounts. Assets add to your total and liabilities subtract from it. Keeping balances current ensures your net worth dashboard stays accurate.
