Goodbudget is an envelope budgeting app for iPhone, Android and the web. For Canadians two questions matter: the currency, and whether the bank connection reaches Canadian banks. On currency, Goodbudget's help centre says: "Goodbudget is currency-neutral, meaning there are no currency symbols (e.g., $, €, £) within the app or on the website." You do not pick a main currency, so you can budget in Canadian dollars. The same article says the app is "designed to track a single currency at a time". On bank connection, its help centre says: "Goodbudget uses Plaid to connect your GB Accounts and your real-life banks in the United States only." Bank sync belongs to the Premium plan, so in Canada transactions are added by hand. NivoaFlow is built for Canadian money. It works in Canadian dollars, connects Canadian banks on its paid plans, keeps TFSA, RRSP and FHSA room in view on Personal and Household, and explains where you stand in plain words with the working shown. It starts free, with 35 days of full access and no credit card.
Goodbudget lists Premium at US $10 a month or $80 a year on its subscribe page, and says on its refunds page that you can have a full refund within the first 30 days of a subscription. The pages we read did not list a free trial. NivoaFlow starts free, with Personal at $8.99 CAD a month.
Feature-by-feature comparison
On NivoaFlow, the free plan covers manual entry, CSV import, budgets and goals. Bank sync, TFSA, RRSP and FHSA tracking, and cash-flow and debt planning are on Personal.
Where Goodbudget is stronger
If these matter most to you, Goodbudget lists more of them than NivoaFlow does.
Where NivoaFlow differs
Bank sync for Canadian accounts
Goodbudget says its bank sync works with United States banks only. NivoaFlow connects Canadian banks and keeps your TFSA, RRSP and FHSA room in view on Personal and Household plans.
Canadian dollars, with the registered accounts
NivoaFlow starts on a free plan with no time limit and prices its paid plans in Canadian dollars. It tracks the account types Canadians use, which Goodbudget does not list in the pages we checked.
A plain-language read
NivoaFlow explains where you stand and what each choice could do to your future. It shows the evidence behind what it says, and you confirm what is true.
Currency, as Goodbudget describes it
Goodbudget's help article "How can I select a currency?" says: "Goodbudget is currency-neutral, meaning there are no currency symbols (e.g., $, €, £) within the app or on the website." It also says the app is "designed to track a single currency at a time", and that if you move to a country with a different currency you must "manually update your Account balances to reflect their value in your new currency." The article says the app cannot "distinguish between different denominations or perform live exchange rate conversions", so tracking two currencies means converting by hand. We read it on October 16, 2026. Check it again before you decide, because only Goodbudget can say if that changes.
Bank sync in Canada
The Goodbudget help article "Which Banks Can Sync with Goodbudget" says: "Goodbudget uses Plaid to connect your GB Accounts and your real-life banks in the United States only." Its subscribe page lists the same limit as a Premium feature: "Link Accounts for Automatic Bank Sync (US Banks only)". Neither page mentions Canada or Canadian banks. In Canada that means transactions are entered by hand.
What the free plan gives you
Goodbudget's subscribe page lists the free plan as "10 Regular Envelopes", "10 Annual/Goal Envelopes", "1 Account", "Share your budget with 2 mobile devices" and "1 year of transaction history". Premium adds unlimited envelopes and accounts, sharing with 5 mobile devices, 7 years of transaction history and e-mail support. If you want envelope budgeting on a phone with one account and typed-in transactions, the free plan covers it.
What NivoaFlow includes, and on which plan
NivoaFlow has a free plan with no time limit, which covers manual entry, CSV import, budgets, goals and net worth tracking. Bank sync, brokerage sync, automatic categorization and TFSA, RRSP and FHSA tracking are on Personal, which is $8.99 CAD a month, and on Household. New accounts get 35 days of full access with no credit card.
