Reconnecting an Expired Institution

How to fix a broken institution connection when your credentials expire or change.

Last updated May 2, 2026

When Your Connection Needs Attention

Institution connections can expire for several reasons. When that happens, NivoaFlow stops receiving new transactions and the affected institution gets a Reconnect badge on Settings → Connected Institutions, along with a banner explaining what to do.

Common Reasons for Expiry

  • Password change — you updated your online banking password
  • MFA changes — you changed your phone number or authentication method
  • Institution maintenance — your institution rotated security tokens or updated their systems
  • Session timeout — the institution requires periodic re-authentication

How to Reconnect

1. Spot the Alert

A red Reconnect badge appears next to any institution that needs attention, and an inline banner shows the message "Your credentials have changed. Please reconnect to restore access." Open Settings → Connected Institutions to see all affected connections.

2. Select Reconnect

Choose the Reconnect action on the affected institution. This opens the Plaid Link widget in update mode.

3. Re-Enter Your Credentials

Sign in with your current online banking username and password. If you recently changed your password, use the new one.

4. Complete MFA

If your institution requires multi-factor authentication, follow the prompts to verify your identity.

5. Connection Restored

Once authentication succeeds, the connection is restored immediately. NivoaFlow then syncs any transactions that were missed during the disconnection period.

Tips for Avoiding Frequent Disconnections

  • Keep your banking credentials stable — frequent password changes trigger more reconnection prompts
  • Keep your MFA contact details current with your institution
  • Check in periodically — even without an alert, a quick Sync now confirms everything is working

Still Having Trouble?

If reconnecting does not resolve the issue, you can disconnect the institution and add it back as a new connection. Your existing transactions and categorisation are preserved — only the sync link is refreshed. For a full error-by-error walkthrough, see troubleshooting bank connections.
