Five Strategies, One App

NivoaFlow offers five distinct budgeting strategies, all available on every plan including Free. You can switch between them anytime without losing your data — your transactions, categories, and history all stay intact.

The Strategies at a Glance

Envelope Budgeting

Allocate a set amount to each category "envelope" every month and track spending against each one. When an envelope runs out, you know to stop spending in that category.

Best for: Beginners and anyone who likes visual spending limits per category.

See envelope budgeting for details.

Zero-Based Budgeting

Assign every dollar of income to a specific category until your remaining balance is exactly zero. Nothing goes unplanned.

Best for: People who want maximum control and intentionality with every dollar.

See zero-based budgeting for details.

50/30/20 Rule

Split your after-tax income into three buckets: 50% Needs, 30% Wants, 20% Savings. NivoaFlow auto-groups your categories into these buckets based on their category group.

Best for: Those who prefer a simple, high-level framework without detailed per-category limits.

See 50/30/20 rule for details.

Pay Yourself First

Set a savings target first (such as 20% of income). That amount is treated as a non-negotiable "expense" and everything left over is your spending budget.

Best for: Savings-focused individuals who want to build wealth before spending.

See pay yourself first for details.

Spending Tracker

Track spending across categories without setting per-category limits. Use it as a baseline view while you decide on a more structured strategy.

Best for: People who want visibility before committing to a target-driven plan.

How to Choose

Ask yourself:

  • New to budgeting? Start with Envelope — it is simple and visual
  • Want every dollar accounted for? Try Zero-Based
  • Prefer simplicity? The 50/30/20 Rule keeps things high-level
  • Savings is your priority? Pay Yourself First puts savings at the top
  • Just want to watch the numbers first? Use Spending Tracker

If you want planning that goes beyond a monthly budget — multi-month projections, debt payoff plans, or risk simulation — those tools are part of the Personal plan.

Switching Strategies

You can change your budget strategy anytime from your budget settings. Your transaction history, categories, and budget targets carry over where applicable. Only the budgeting framework changes.
