What TFSA Contribution Room Means
Your TFSA contribution room accumulates every year starting from when you turned 18 or 2009 (whichever is later). The annual limit is set by the federal government and has ranged from $5,000 to $10,000. For 2026, the limit is $7,000.
If you were 18 or older in 2009 and have never contributed, your total room in 2026 is $109,000. Unused room carries forward indefinitely.
In plain language, TFSA contribution room is the amount you can still deposit without triggering the CRA's 1% monthly over-contribution penalty.
Withdrawal rule: When you withdraw from your TFSA, that amount is added back to your contribution room on January 1st of the following year. Don't re-contribute in the same calendar year unless you have enough room.
When TFSA Contribution Room Starts and Resets
TFSA contribution room starts in the year you turn 18 if you are a Canadian resident. If you were already 18 or older when the TFSA launched in 2009, your room started accumulating in 2009.
TFSA room resets every January 1. That is also when prior-year withdrawals are added back to your available room.
If you withdraw in July and re-contribute in October, that is only safe if you still had unused room left. Otherwise the withdrawal room does not come back until January 1 of the next year.
