Using Tags
Create custom tags with colours to organise and filter transactions for tracking specific purposes.
Flexible Organisation Beyond Categories
Tags give you an extra layer of organisation on top of categories. While a transaction can only have one category, it can have multiple tags — making tags ideal for cross-cutting tracking. Tags are available on every tier, including Free, with no per-account limit.
Creating Tags
Create tags from the tags settings or on the fly when editing a transaction:
- Name — a short label like "Vacation," "Business," or "Gift"
- Colour — pick a colour to make tags visually distinct
Tags are reusable across all transactions and accounts.
Applying Tags to Transactions
When viewing or editing a transaction, tap the Tags field and select one or more tags. You can also add tags during bulk review.
Tags vs. Categories
| Categories | Tags | |
|---|---|---|
| Per transaction | One only | Multiple |
| Purpose | Budget tracking and reporting | Flexible organisation |
| Groups | Income, Needs, Wants, Savings | No grouping |
| Budget impact | Yes — counts toward category budget | No direct budget impact |
Use categories for your primary spending classification and tags for secondary tracking.
Common Tag Use Cases
- #vacation — tag all spending during a trip to see the total cost later
- #business — track deductible business expenses across multiple categories
- #gift — flag gift purchases for holiday or birthday spending totals
- #impulse — track impulse purchases to build awareness
For reimbursements specifically, use the dedicated Expect reimbursement flag on the transaction edit sheet rather than a tag — it links to the incoming payment and nets your budget automatically. See tracking reimbursements.
Filtering by Tag
Use the tag filter on the transactions page to view only transactions with a specific tag. This makes it easy to:
- See total vacation spending across all categories
- Review all business expenses before tax time
- Group anything else you want to count separately from your category totals
Tips
- Keep tag names short — they appear as badges on transactions
- Use colours intentionally — similar tags get similar colours for quick scanning
- Do not over-tag — a handful of meaningful tags is more useful than dozens of rarely-used ones
